Rin - Tin - Tin

A couple of weeks ago, I popped into Marks & Spencer while I was at a motorway services.  There I found an adorable biscuit tin - a sweet double decker bus with an array of passengers at the windows. The illustrations are reminiscent of M. Sasek

Don't know what it is about M & S and their biscuit tins but they seem to consider their choices carefully.

I've been meaning to mention that I got a couple of last year's edition of Sanna Annukka designed tins (complete with biscuits of course).  I was quite disappointed to miss out on the ones released the year before so was pleased to pick these two up in December last year.

I really like this detail on the side.
I must admit, they were all a bit pricey for a tin of biccies (no matter how nice they were) but the fact I can keep the tins for years evens it out a bit for me.

I was disappointed to miss out on these puffer fish.  Ugly little suckers, aren't they?

Any tiki afficionado knows that these are vital to set the atmosphere in their tiki establishment - in my case the corner of my lounge room above my fish tank.  Especially when they're lit up.  Here is a vintage shot of some hanging in a Don the Beachcombers:

Ah well, I'm sure I'll have even better ones when my home tiki bar is up and running - lights and all.

It began with Bye Bye Birdie and Gidget just made it worse- my Keds obsession that is.

The scene below from Bye Bye Birdie (the 1963 version) started me thinking I needed to inject more colour into my shoes.  Watching Sally Field's Gidget match various coloured trainers (with contrasting white laces) to her wardrobe encouraged me to research this 60s trend.

It seems to me that Keds were the trainer of choice in the 1960s (at least in America).  They were available in a variety of colours and patterns.  I don't recall the brand as a child so I'm not sure exactly how long they've been available in other countries but I know I can buy them in England now.

The first I ever heard of Keds was in the movie, Stand By Me - "The train had knocked Ray Brower out of his Keds the same way it hadknocked the life out of his body".  Audrey Hepburn was said to have made them fashionable after wearing them in the movie, Two for the Road but they have been available since 1916.

I have been watching a lot of Gidget lately and am becoming strongly influenced by her cute style.  She seems to have a different colour for each outfit although her favourites would probably be these red ones.

Although it was very hard to get this snapshot, Gidget's red trainers really stood out to me.

Gidget's friend LaRue also wears them (with a very similar outfit).

Since I've only just recently bought a pair of red Converse, I've decided upon a yellow pair for my very first Keds (you can probably tell I don't wear heels much).

I can think of a lot worse...

I'm not sure I can stop at just one pair - I'm already sure I need a pair of white ones too!

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a great start to the new year.  It greeted me with a faulty phone line which meant I've been without phone or internet since New Year's day!  It only returned this afternoon and since then I've been a bit like a kid in a candy store - like I've discovered the internet for the very first time.

I will reply to comments and check everyone else's blogs as soon as I can but first I need to relocate my usual blog banner before the 6th of January comes to a close...
