Beware! The Blob

I was listening to the latest edition of 'The Quiet Village' podcast - a must for tikiphiles - when I heard a catchy little ditty.  It was the theme from the original 1958 movie, 'The Blob'.

(You may want to skip to about the 1 minute mark as there's quite a long intro)

Beware of the blob...
it creeps and leaps and glides
and slides across the floor,
right through the door
and all around the wall
- a blotch, a splotch
be careful of the blob.

What a fun little tune for something so terrifyingly fearsome.  I'm ashamed to say I've never seen this classic movie and have now made arrangements to do so this Halloween.

Here is a trailer for 'The Blob' (starring Steve McQueen and a cast of exciting young people) - they play this trailer at the drive-in in Grease.  Included is it's 1972 sequel, 'Son of Blob' (which looks absolutely hilarious).

Tiki Mail

I was excited to welcome my new pals into my home this morning.  Above is an Orchids of Hawaii R-12 mug.  Below is a Trader Dick's 'Nugget' Moai and a KC Co Ltd 'God of Money' mug.

I got some tiki bits and bobs too.  I have been looking around for tiki style swizzlers and matchbooks so these came as a very nice surprise.

They are from the Canadian chain of Beachcomber Polynesian Restaurants which closed down in 1981.  The pictures below are of the Edmonton restaurant but these could have come from one of its other locations.

In other news, I 'invented' my own tiki drink on Friday night.  I use inverted commas because surely  someone else is bound to have used the combination before.  Regardless, I think it tasted very nice.  If you're interested, why not try the MoonDoggie? I used:

1 shot of white rum (bacardi)
1 shot of spiced rum (Captain Morgan's)
2 shots of coconut rum (Malibu)
1 shot of grenadine
Fill the rest up with pineapple juice and SHAKE.

Enjoy!

What's the Plan, Stan?

I may have mentioned before that England isn't really the place to be for the mid century architectural styles I go for.  They do exist but land and housing is at such a premium that they are few and far between and seem to go for exorbitant prices.

I've started thinking about the possibility of building our own home.  Of course, this is just an idea in embryo and I haven't really looked into it but I'm wondering if it could be cheaper.  I have no idea what the going rate for an architect is but I found there are already plans out there on the internet.

I adore the house above but these two aren't so shabby either and very different to standard house fare in England.

These plans are available at the US based site Family Home Plans for about $500 but there are many more there.  My mind is ticking over...

Boot Sale Booty

Last weekend Dave's mother and brother came to visit from the midlands. This was great as I finally had someone to go to a bootsale with me as Dave is VERY reluctant. We found some bargains, for sure.

I finally found me some 'Little Forks' - in their own box too.  I've been after some for quite a while as they remind me of staying at my grandmother's.  They'll come in handy at Christmas.

Also found this serving tray in its original packaging:

I was excited to come across 'The Monkees Annual' from 1967.  It's not in great condition as some of the pages have unsightly stains but I'd never come across one before (there are LOADS on eBay).

I think I might scan some pages later to share with you good folks.  Until then, ta-ta!

My Love is Like a Red, Red Tulip

I've been sitting on these in my favourites folder for a while now.  Red leather lounge chairs with tulip bases.
Not sure if they're still available but they can be found on 1stdibs.com from NOHO Modern.  They don't name a particular maker.

For some reason, I seem to think I live in a large Eichler home. There is NOWHERE to put these chairs in my flat. In my dream home though...

Without explaining where I've been (because its far too boring) I'll jump right into showing you these fantastically funky flueless fires I found yesterday (that, kids, is called alliteration).

The Retro fireplace is apparently eco-friendly and comes in a variety of colours.  Sadly, it sells for around £6000!

I also quite like this Q fireplace.  It reminds me of the ball chair and various other round pieces of furniture from the sixties.

Find out more about them at ecosmartfire.com or click on the pictures above.

Cushion the 'Fall'

22:20:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

The Scandiphone arrived today but there wasn't enough light to take a photo when I got in.

However, this op-art cushion cover came all the way from Australia during the week.  I'd seen the fabric for sale on Retro Age Vintage Fabrics and asked my mum (who lives in Australia) to make me up a cushion with it.

The colours are so bright and vivid.

You can see my funky cactus plants I got from Ikea on the window sill too.

Call Me Al

I finally ordered a Scandiphone this week.  I mentioned it back in January when I envisioned it standing tall in its scarlet glory upon my Componibili.  Considering we already had 2 house phones (one is an internet phone), plus mobile phones in our tiny one bedroom flat it would've been an unnecessary purchase.
Would have been
That's all changed now that our main cordless house phone doesn't seem to be holding its charge.  I saw no alternative but to get a scandiphone... (just let me have this one, please).

I was hoping to show you a picture of my new phone by now.  It was apparently dispatched a few days ago but since I still haven't received it yet I've been looking at some other beauties while I wait impatiently.

Achtung!

Whilst conducting my regular ebay trawl for a reasonably priced Carlton Ware bird dish, I came across a Carlton Ware Hitler!

Dave was quite taken with it and said he was willing to pay up to £30 for it.  Always happy when Dave takes an interest in these things, I thought I'd better check it out first before placing a bid.

Sure enough I was to find that these figures are fakes.  Carlton Ware World claims these started appearing in the 90s.  They believe they have been made from modified Carlton Ware moulds as factory records state there were models based on war figures however these never went into production. The site states:
They are not made by Carlton Ware, but by whoever it was who acquired its master mould after receivership in 1989.

Buyer beware!
I'm glad I did my research.  This particular auction even has a picture of a stamp on its base which 'somebody' has commented dates it between 1906 and 1927 (well before the second world war).  It would be my guess that someone has taken one of the pieces produced in the 90s and faked the stamp to make it appear older.

Brace Yourself

I find this postcard strangely hilarious.

On the back is written;“save that roll of tape, Doctor…prescribe comfortable OTC rib belts for your rib-fracture cases…easily removable for bathing, examination, or dressing…foam rubber padded or flannel-lined.”

Hopefully your weekend won't end up like this but if it does at least you have a choice between foam rubber padded or flannel-lined.
