Before They Were Bradys...

Haven't done a Brady Bunch related post for a while but came across something I found interesting.

Someone on YouTube posted commercials featuring some of the Brady kids before they were Bradys.

We have Greg obsessing over Milky Way bars (c1968);

Marcia conversing with her Chatty Cathy doll (c1964);

and Peter with his Fun Pack Carry-all Action Playset (c1968).

Maureen McCormick was such a beautiful child.  Enjoy!

O Ford

Wow! Further to my post urging the motor industry to produce retro-styled cars, I came across the Ford O21C designed by Marc Newson - who designed the Nimrod chair shown in my previous post.

Ford asked Newson to design this concept car which was shown at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show.
Check out the Nimrod-like chairs (they swivel!):

The Nimrod

Sadly, the O21C (named after the designer's favourite pantone colour) was never made available to the public.
Again, I would much rather drive this car than the boring models on offer today.
Read more about it at Yatzer.

Nimrod's Son

While looking for the groovy chairs featured in the Sherwin Williams catalogues (see here and here), I came across the nimrod chair.  I can imagine my spacious modern home with a few of these scattered about.

As cool as they are solo, I think you need a multi-coloured group for the best effect.

Although they look like they're from the 60s or 70s, the futuristic Nimrod was designed in 1997 by Marc Newson

While I'm still trying to find out information on the groovy' mystery chairs' from the 1966 Sherwin Williams catalogue, Pam from retro renovation only goes and posts some more pictures of them - this time from 1968.  I see there were smaller stools made as well (near drum kit).

Let me know if you spy them on your travels - I'm keen to find out more about them.

Pam at retro renovation uploaded her 1966 Sherwin Williams paint brochure a few days a go and I've been swooning over these colourful chairs ever since.  Can you see the matching stools in the background too?
Does anyone know if these chairs have a name?

I've become a bit fixated on them but there were other snippets of inspiration in the rest of the catalogue too.  Despite the lemon tree 'feature', I quite like the look of this yellow themed bathroom:

It seems so bright and fresh.  Blue bathrooms are everywhere and I'm sick of them (sorry 'blue bathroomers') so maybe this is the way to go.  I think the teal accessories stop it from looking too yellow (notice I said 'teal' and not 'blue').
Another example of my love for white joined with bold colour:

I think the cupboards look really cool but I would probably keep the walls white.
I'm not so keen on this room but like the look of the green window seat with white piping, or whatever you call that.

You can see the rest of the catalogue here and pics from a 1967 catalogue here.

Get it MADE

12:42:00 MoonDoggie 7 Comments

I found a nice, new blog while I was coughing up a lung at about 4am this morning - Quest Twenty Eight.  The first blog post I read pointed the way to a new site called MADE.com.  They're aiming to be purveyors of affordable design furniture and what I've seen so far is impressive.

There's also a voting section where the most popular of a selection of pieces will be made.  I really hope the grey sofa bed (pictured above) wins.  At £169 it's affordable enough for us to buy now (to replace our crippled couch) and then when we move into a bigger place it can be transferred to 'the spare room' for visiting guests.  Vote here to make this dream a reality for me.

Or you may prefer to vote for this sideboard instead:
If neither of those two don't take your fancy I could handle having this corner sofa instead at £499:

There's already a similar version of the sofa bed made with PU leather and available in black, brown or cream (pictured here);
but I'd prefer the cloth.

If you want to know more about the company you can read an article from guardian.co.uk.  Meanwhile, I've got my finger on the trigger for this bubble lamp:

Enamoured with Enamel

It's 3am and you can't sleep because you're ill.
What do you do?
Well for some reason, if you're me, you search eBay and Etsy for enamelware.

Some of my Etsy finds:

Spot a theme?

Some of my UK eBay finds (most ending soon so be quick):

Chickens AND flowers!

Big Green Pot

Orange and White casserole pan

A larger blue version

My personal favourite (beside the chicken and flowers combo) were these Cathrineholm fondue pieces from an international seller:

Cathrineholm fondue

So glorious and ROUND and only $9.99 ($45 to ship to UK!).  However, I'm not sure how it would 'work' without its stand that you can see in this picture:

Tandem Antiques and Design
I will not be buying any of these pieces (self imposed spending hiatus) so feel free to bid away.

Figaro, Figaro, Figaro

I've often longed for a vintage car but realise with no mechanical experience, the running costs would quickly add up and I wouldn't be sure of its reliability.  Hey, I'm sure they were VERY reliable 50 or 60 years ago but all those years would take a toll on anybody.

So in turn, I've also often longed for a modern car with the looks and styling of a vintage car.  Little did I know, Nissan had already done just that in the early 1990s. Enter the Nissan Figaro:

I had seen a couple around, thinking they were vintage but inside they are fitted out to 1991 specifications including a retro styled CD player.

Unfortunately, these cute little cars are twenty years old now so I would still be concerned about reliability. They seem to have been very popular indeed when they were released (they needed to have a kind of lottery to allocate the 20,000 produced) so why the heck has no one else done this?

I mean, it just makes sense, almost EVERYONE loves the look of mid century cars.
So come on, car companies, hear my cries...

What do we want?
Retro Styled cars with modern specifications.
When do we want them?
NOW!

Stamp Out the Beatles

07:21:00 MoonDoggie 3 Comments

I can't believe it's been nearly three weeks since I last posted.  Work has been particularly demanding lately and I've missed my little blog.

So anyway, I came across this hoodie a while ago and have finally decided to buy it:

Although not vintage, the print looked as though it had been designed in the 60s (unlike a lot of so-called retro clothing out there).  I decided to find out more.

Apparently, there was a Detroit based 'Stamp Out the Beatles' campaign in 1964.  This campaign was mentioned in an interview with the band two days before leaving for America:

Q: "I must tell you, by the way, that Detroit University have got a 'Stamp Out The Beatles' movement."
GEORGE: "I know, yeah."
JOHN: "Yeah, we heard something about that."
PAUL: "We've got a 'Stamp Out Detroit!'"
(laughter)
Q: "They think your haircuts are un-American."
JOHN: "Well, it was very observant of them because we aren't American, actually."
PAUL: (laughs) "True, that."
JOHN: "True. True."
The 'movement' was also referred to in the press conference given at Kennedy International Airport after the Beatles had touched down in America for the first time (You can read a transcript of the interview at BeatlesInterviews.org).

George Harrison and Beatles manager Brian Epstein were photographed wearing a sweatshirt (possibly the same one) with a 'Stamp Out the Beatles' print.  Epstein was apparently very reluctant to put it on but was eventually persuaded.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about this campaign and I've had trouble finding any definitive explanation but according to a knowledgeable person on this forum, this sweatshirt wasn't actually made by the 'movement' but rather made to SPOOF it.

You can get one of your own here.
