Wall to Wall

09:38:00 MoonDoggie 6 Comments

Tired of the slim pickings here in the UK, I took a walk on the wild side and checked out some US ebay listings.  I'm loving these wall sculptures:

To find them just do a search for wall sculpture.

I Spy With My Beady Eye

22:42:00 MoonDoggie 1 Comments

This post has nothing to do with retro or vintage but I just wanted to share (again) how amazingly talented my husband is.  This was one of his 'doodles' the other night while I was 'busy' on the computer:

Not exactly something I'd want on my wall but I just wish I had a smidgeon of his talent - dagnab it!

A Flying Duck-cess

I am so pleased to announce that I have finally obtained some vintage flying ducks.
I'd kind of given up hope.  They should arrive in a few days.  I'll take a pic of them when they're up on my wall.
Viva la Ducks!

Splash of Orange

18:39:00 MoonDoggie 4 Comments

I've been obsessing over orange walls ever since I saw these pictures on Jill Browning's blog

These photos are of a unit converted from motel rooms (link).  I love how the colour stands out against the white furniture and fittings.  Not sure I could pull off a white couch but I do envision white shelving against my orange wall.

I'm not mad about the colour of the wall in this photo but I am loving the bedspread.

A Likely Story

20:57:00 MoonDoggie 8 Comments

Trying to figure out if I like these Eames dot mugs or not...
I mean, I like them but I'm not sure if I '£8 like' them.  What do you think?

And if I decide I DO '£8 like' these mugs, do I black, red or orange like them?

Found at Utility - thanks to a heads up from RetroToGo.

A Single House

21:18:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

In my last post on the movie, A Single Man, I showed you a screen shot of the main character's marvelous mid century modern home.  Well, the house is not just a set, it exists! This Lautner designed home, only 15 minutes from downtown LA was up for sale not so long ago too.  You can see some clearer shots (in and out) on HUH.

But wait... there's more!  The cool university buildings which I was unable to get a good screen shot of are what was formerly known as Ambassador College in Pasadena:

A Single Movie

10:52:00 MoonDoggie 1 Comments

The movie, A Single Man starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore may not be to everyone's taste but the sets are definitely to mine.

Just look at the house the main character lives in:
His bedroom:
A better look at the cool wall art (looks 3D to me):
Part of the living room (stylish chairs... check; fireplace... check):

Firth's character is a university professor.  Naturally the university buildings need to look as stylish as him:
As does his office:
Dig the workplace wall art:

When you're this cool, a stylish best friend is also a necessity:
A house without an internal orange grove should be considered incomplete:
Look closer... those cigarettes are pink

Almost makes me want to take up smoking (the power of movie imagery at work, people).

Of course, the rest of his world is stylish too...
from a trip to the bank:
to a stop at the convenience store:

The story itself isn't exactly fast paced (it's not meant to be) but if the sets appeal to you, maybe the movie will too.

Pretty Flamingo

17:00:00 MoonDoggie 0 Comments

Every other person and their dog seem to want some vintage wall ducks and despite being involved in some very frustrating bidding incidents trying to get my hands on them - they have so far eluded my grasp.

Since the ducks have been unobtainable my thoughts turned to another bastion of Kitsch - Pink Flamingos.

The original pink lawn ornaments/eyesores (depending on which way you look at them) were designed by Don Featherstone in the late 1950s.  They were apparently prolific but try as I might,  I have been unable to find any circa 1950s photos of lawns with flamingos.  If you know of any please send 'em my way.

The closest I have been able to find is a postcard and pictures of the Fabulous Flamingo hotel in Las Vegas (circa 50s/60s):

That tower is really something else!

George Harrison
source unknown

MidCenturyMadam posted on her blog a couple of days ago about going to a Paul McCartney concert and included a picture of Paul looking quite scrummy.

To be honest, I never really thought any of the Beatles were particularly good looking and wondered if I would've been so hot and bothered had I been around for Beatlesmania.  That was until I came across the above picture of George Harrison.  Something about it seems very hot to me.

Paul looking cute on Mid Century Madness, reminded me the pic was lurking about on my hard drive somewhere and so I thought I'd share it with you.

Vintage Click

18:23:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

Ages ago (March 2009), I posted about decorative concrete blocks and mentioned how the memory of my grandparents' concrete walls have stuck with me to this day. (Read that post here.)

Space Commander, from Atomic Living blog, posted today about concrete screens which reminded me that I now have a picture of one of my grandparents' walls to share.

I love this photo because my brother (the toddler) looks as though he's snatching his arm away and walking off in a huff from my dad. My mum and grandmother gaze upon him with that adoring look seemingly reserved for first born children/grandchildren (I'm a middle child and not bitter in the slightest).  ;)

Vintage Click posts have been few and far between since I didn't have any old photographs in my possession, but now my collection is growing, I hope to share them with you more regularly.

A Very Brady Supermarket

20:12:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

It's been a while since my last Brady Bunch post.  Unfortunately, I've been a little too busy to finish watching season 3 but thought I'd share something I found interesting from one of the episodes I've seen so far.

'And Now, a Word From Our Sponsor' was one of the few episodes filmed partly on location.  The Bradys were spotted leaving the supermarket by some strange post-beatnik television director.  He stalks them across the carpark and offers them the opportunity to star in a laundry detergent commercial because they really are "the whole ball of wax".

A comment on YouTube pointed out that this market, then known as Mayfair, is still around now as Gelson's.

If you google 5877 Franklin Avenue (and move the camera around a bit) you will get this view:

And if you check across the street, the mini mall you can see in the background is still there too (only now obscured a bit by trees):

Apparently 'updating' markets means making them look as boring as possible:

I much prefer the 1971-72 version of the building AND carpark. Get a load of the cars!
If in the vicinity, how could any Brady fan resist shopping where the Bradys got their groceries?
Let me know if you ever pay it a visit.

You can watch this episode on YouTube.

Come to Mama!

20:47:00 MoonDoggie 6 Comments

Yay! After months of bidding against people with deep pockets, I finally 'won' something on eBay.
If you follow my blog you may know that I've been after one of these elephant money banks for a while (see my post: Elephant-itis).

Well, now I'm going to have not just one, but three! (and for a very reasonable price)

They're sure to be tired after their journey from Germany, but I'll try to take some photos of the new babies after they've settled in.

Vikings, Pastries and Other Things

21:38:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

I'm so excited!
Ebbo and I have booked our summer holiday... to Copenhagen!

Not just the source of vikings, pastries and large dogs, Denmark was also the home to Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton.  The famous egg chair was designed by Jacobsen for the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen (now called the Radisson Blu).  In one of the rooms (Room 606), the hotel has even preserved the original Arne Jacobsen décor from when it opened in July 1960.

This hotel was a consideration, but unfortunately my budget was a bigger one.

As if the home of Danish modern wasn't enough, we're also going to pop over to Sweden for the day via the Oresund bridge. Scandinavia, here we come!

Aaaaah... Fashion!

10:22:00 MoonDoggie 6 Comments

This image gave me such a good laugh that I needed to share it.

Wanderingstan uploaded some 1973 German catalogues to flickr and Gilligan from retrospace posted a slideshow he had made from the images.  How can one man look so macho AND ridiculous in the same shot?

The next picture really made me giggle when I imagined how Ebbo would have looked sporting these high fashion dungarees.

Although the catalogue is generally a fashion horrorfest, I actually quite like these dresses. Very Carol Brady.

Feast your eyes on the rest of the catalogue (including a seductive underwear section) on wanderingstan's photostream.  Thankyou again retrospace for starting my day right.
