Brady Mystery Solved?

I think I may have solved the puzzle of the mystery Brady Bunch object!
If you don't know what I'm talking about, read my post King of the Brady Jungle.

I was perusing the Mid Century Modern Ceramics & Tableware pool on flickr when I came across this picture:

I've had a bit of a thing for mid century ceramic animals lately so I went to research more on Aldo Londi for Bitossi.  I came across a post by Happy Mundane (back in 2007) which included a picture of this ceramic cat designed by Aldo Londi:

This has to be it, right?
The LINE RIMINI ROSSO VENEZIANO (Cat figurine) was reissued by Flavia but is sadly now sold out.

This description from the Flavia website:
The cat's long body is hand-thrown on the wheel with other pieces, applied by hand.
Embossed with the popular "Rimini" pattern covering the entire object. "Veneziano" red colour with semi-matt glaze. Red clay with refractory.
I presume they were originally made in different colours, although the Brady one doesn't seem to have any pattern.  Here's one of the pics for comparison:

What do you think?

Stig People

via eBay

I noticed these little fellas on eBay and thought they were cute. They're actually a cruet set (or part of one) and were designed by Stig Lindberg.  I've mentioned him before on this blog, namely my post, Bring on the Stig.

They ended up selling for £56!

More London Transport Love

Here are some more London Transport posters from the London Transport Museum website.  These are by Abram Games from the 1960s:

I think it's especially cool that the horse's head is Big Ben.  You can also buy these from the Abram Games Poster Shop site.

I also quite like this 1961 poster by Edward Robert Bartlett.  It's so sweet - such a shame I can't find a larger image.

Boot Sale Blues

13:21:00 MoonDoggie 4 Comments

Today I went to a large boot sale but was sadly disappointed.  It was one of those days where most people are just getting rid of their kids' rubbish.
Luckily I didn't go home emptyhanded.  I found what I think are 1970s place mats (pictured above) for a very cheap price.  Or they may be those cloths people used to put on the arms of their chairs.
Hope your vintage treasure hunts went better than mine today.

Big Cheese - Make Me

17:51:00 MoonDoggie 11 Comments

I've been obsessing over fondue for some time now.  I'm desperate to find a really funky, and of course, vintage fondue pot so I can throw a fondue party.  Here are some groovy ones:

I think my current favourite is the bottom yellow one.  It's the same pattern as one of the green ones but I think it really 'pops' on yellow.

For true authenticity, I would have to use a vintage recipe, of course. I did think I only had to whack in a lump of cheese and melt that baby down but apparently you should add things to it. This makes sense otherwise I'd have been better off sticking with cheese on toast.
Laura from Plaid Pony Vintage posted some 1966 fondue recipes on her blog from the 'Better Homes and Gardens Cooking with Cheese' cookbook.  As good a place to start as any, I reckon.  Now, if only I could find the right pot...

When Ducks Fly

23:55:00 MoonDoggie 12 Comments

Flying ducks - the epitome of bad taste or kitschy cool?
Originally made in 1938 by Beswick, they have since become synonymous with 1950s living rooms (at least in the UK).  I've never really thought much about them either way but Dave says he wouldn't mind having some - which I didn't expect, to be honest.

You can now buy modern reproductions all over the net (like in the pic above from dotcomgiftshop) but obviously if I were going to get some I'd want them vintage.  The picture below is the only one I could find of these ducks in their natural environment (circa 1960s):

So, what do you think?  Is this just a British thing?

Touching Base

22:00:00 MoonDoggie 3 Comments

While driving home tonight, I was listening to Radio 2.  Scott Mills' had a band called 'The Baseballs' with him in the studio.  The Baseballs are a German band who do covers of current pop songs but in a rock 'n' roll style.

They seemed like sweet guys and their music was good fun.  You can watch their new video, Umbrella (made famous by Rihanna) below, but I think I prefer their version of Katy Perry's Hot 'n' Cold

You can find out more about the band on their website.

Bin There, Done That

I like the look of these recycling bins:

Originally seen on Retro To Go, I managed to find them a bit cheaper via Kitchen Critic at wotever.co.uk. Cheaper but still pricey. I'm not really sure if the compartments would be big enough for me but there's the perfect spot for it in my kitchen.  I am so sick of our rubbish taking up what little space we have.

My other choice would be the Ovetto Recycling Bin which looks a little bit like R2D2 without his makeup on:

I'm kinda leaning towards the Ovetto because of it's funky look but like that the first one seems like it would take up less floor space.

Vintage Click

22:22:00 MoonDoggie 5 Comments

I managed to scan a few photos using a friend's scanner tonight so here is the first 'Vintage Click' post in quite a while.

This is a photograph of my grandmother taken in 1969.  The building behind her is the James Cook University library in Townsville, Australia. You may remember this building from one of the posts I did about trying to locate 'Googie' outside the U.S (go here).

I think her outfit is quite cute (for an older lady) and if my eyes don't deceive me, I do believe she's wearing gloves - chic!

Hippies Make Me Happie

image via Changes.org

I've literally spent 5 hours trying to get my scanner to work this evening and it's just not happening.  I wanted to show some of my grandma's old photos but instead I'll talk about hippies.

A comment from 1950s Atomic Ranch House to my post about the 1970 issue of TEEN magazine got me researching the Haight-Ashbury 'hippie invasion' in the summer of 1967.  I found a couple of really cool videos on History.com about this event.

This one (set to Cream's Sunshine of Your Love), gives you a brief yet informative explanation of what went down;

and this one is from a British report of the invasion from 1967 - worth watching for the dancing hippies alone (beginning at 2:07) or the toff pronunciation of 'hippie' at the beginning.

Ebbo's Animalia and Orange Grove

11:53:00 MoonDoggie 2 Comments

My resident artist (and husband), Ebbo, has been busy this weekend.

The first piece, Orange Tree, was also based on a sketch he did ages ago while watching tv one night.  Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner right now to show the original sketch but it developed into this massive (ridiculously difficult to photograph) 42in x 35in painting:

Next is this fancy caterpillar (on a 7in x 5in board):

It was based on this caterpillar from a series of animal drawings he did (that I managed to scan ages ago):

Here are some other animal sketches from what I call the fancy series:

You may recognise the cat from Ebbo's recent painting, Pride (seen here).

You can see more animals from the 'fancy' series (including a fabulous gorilla) on Artbreak.

Now I'll Never Be a Teen Model

13:43:00 MoonDoggie 5 Comments

Gilligan of Retrospace has kindly uploaded an entire issue of 'Teen magazine from 1970 and it's a corker! (see page 25)  By the way, if you don't already follow Retrospace, you probably should - head over and take a look.

Just like today, there was a big focus on weight loss back then too and since this was a summer issue there were a lot of advertisements to do with getting a suntan.  Astrological star signs were clearly a big fad and even used to advertise products.  There were a few cautions and head shakes towards marijuana use and one poor reader even suspected her boyfriend of acid use but the letters to the editor kept us grounded in the big issues of the day - hemlines.

"Let us hope enough young women can keep their wits about them to survive the hemline hassle" a reader pleads as the battle wages on between midi and mini skirt lovers.  I kid, but it must have been a big deal as I remember it being mentioned in Archie comics a lot.

The ad for ring adapters caught my eye. I wondered how girls 'going steady' managed to wear their boyfriend's ring, well this easily installed ring-adapter helped "change his ring size to yours quick - easy".  Do kids in America still do this? I predict not.

Instead of 'Asking Jill', the dispenser of sage advice gets TOLD:

Dear Jill:
...Why are you so unforgiving? When a girl breaks off with her guy and asks how to get him back you say, 'Are you sure you want a guy who left you for someone else?'

Sensible advice, I thought but this reader didn't think so;

"Just how unfeeling are you? Every girl wants her guy back.  Erik and I went together for two years, and he left me for someone else.  Did I give up? NO! I fought for him. After two months he came back. I won! We're going to be married".

She didn't mention her age but I'd love to find out how S. Rigby of Iowa's marriage fared.

I love these sundress/bikini combos yet I'm not so sure about this printed terrycloth beachsuit:

Yet there's something I adore about this outfit:

As you can see, my textile and pattern preferences are very difficult even for me to pinpoint.

Download the magazine and then you too can read the entire article on "how to get a teenage boy and what to do with him when you get him".

A snippet:

In brief, get smart.  Just don't show off the brains, that's all. Sure, beneath that smooth exterior there hums a brain. But it surfaces only for air. Why? Because you're going to limit the number of guys you attract if you seem too intellectual. Few guys in their early teens or midteens are secure enough to handle a real 'brain.' They want a smart girl. But not a budding professor.

Oh yeah, and see if you can spot a then unknown Susan Dey in one of the many advertisements dontained within.
